Lady Falcons Drop Season Opener to Apex Cougars, 7-19
The Lady Falcons fought hard, but could not overcome the Apex Lady Cougars in their season opener. The team returned only a handful of starters, and added about as many freshmen to the starting line-up. Recent graduates and their parents were seen in the stands, cheering on the young team.
The Lady Falcons took an early lead at 3-1 with goals by Rachel Chapla, Deirdre O'Connor and Casey Reiser. But the Cougars struck back with 4 straight points of their own. O'Connor scored on a penalty shot to narrow the gap 4-5. After giving up a pair of points, the Falcons scored again at the 8-meter when O'Connor took possession several times after a quick series of Apex penalties. The half ended after the Cougars lit up the scoreboard 5 more times.
The second half saw a 6-point scoring run by the Cougars before newcomer Meghan Hawthorne scored on penalty. Freshman Campbell Stanley scored the final point of the game with less than a minute to go.
Sister act Meghan and Sarah Hawthorne bravely defended the Falcon goal, Allie Klavik clawed her way out of numerous Cougar attacks, newcomers Claire Kilmer and Kendall Hidalgo showed great hustle, and goalie Katie Worsdale ventured out of the cage several times to force turnovers and intercept passes.
The event turned out to be a homecoming of sorts as many recent alumnae and parents were seen (and more importantly, heard) in the stands. Welcome back, ladies!
