Wakefield Wolverines Eek Out Close Win in Overtime, 13-15
In the most tightly contested game of the season, a last minute Falcon score tied up the game in regular play, but the Falcons fell short (with one man down) to lose in overtime.
The game started out slow, going almost five full minutes without a score. But a point on penalty, followed 11 seconds later with a fast break score, put the Wolverines up 2 points. Assisted by Kendall Hidalgo, Meghan Hawthorne scored the first Falcon point. The Wolverines scored next despite some great defense, notably by rookie Claire Kilmore. Rachel Chapla ran in the next point, followed by an amazing crease roll by Deirdre O'Connor. Briana Lowell scored next on penalty. After giving up two more points to the Wolverines, Allie Klavik scored on penalty with less than a minute left to tie the score 5-5 at the half.
The Lady Wolverines scored first in the second half, but Dana Josephson flung one in to tie up the score. After the next Wolverine point, Hawthorne dodged and weaved her way to the crease to slam the next one in. "Sweet shot!" was heard in the stands. O'Connor scored next on a quick stick from a connection by Klavik to take the lead. After another Wolverine point, Taylor Morrison connected to Josephson to retake the lead. Chapla slammed the next one in to increase the lead, 10-8. After calling a time out, the Wolverines scored 3 straight points to take the lead, 10-11. But with just 6 seconds left to play, O'Connor, from behind the net, connected to Josephson on a quick stick to tie up the game, 11-11.
O'Connor ran in the first point of overtime on penalty. An unfortunate yellow card against the Falcons put the team a (wo)man down, which left the door wide open for the Wolverines to score 4 straight points to put the Falcons down by 3 points. But with just 2.1 seconds left on the clock, Casey Reiser narrowed the gap when she ran the last point in, 13-15.
Goalie Katie Worsdale played up the crowd with her numerous stuffs and ground ball recoveries.
