Lady Falcons Take the Middle Creek Mustangs for a Ride and Win, 11-2
The Lady Falcons soundly defeated the Middle Creek Mustangs on Falcon turf. The Mustangs are coached by former Lady Falcon Ashley Ruppert (former teammate of Coach Sibley). The game brought Green Hope lacrosse founder Carol Scarola and husband Jim to the stands.
Rachel Chapla got things started with a quick stick from a pass from Allie Klavik. She repeated the quick stick, this time with help from Deirdre O'Connor, just 20 seconds later. Dana Josephson bounced in the next point on penalty. Meghan Hawthorne ran the next point in. O'Connor scored her own point with a flight around the cage. Rookie Emily Ross assisted Kendall Hidalgo for the next point. (Way to go, Emily!) Nicole Nisbet's penalty point was declared no good. (Was that a yellow card?) But she made good on a ground ball, which made its way to Claire Kilmore for a run-in score. Midway through the half, goalie Cheryl Schlitter was sent in to rescue Katie Worsdale from boredom, as she had had nothing to do thus far. On penalty, Chapla took just one step before she slammed the next point in. Schlitter thwarted 2 shots on goal before the 3rd proved to be a charm and gave the Mustangs their first point. The first half ended at 8-1 with a last second save by Schlitter.
The Mustangs got the first point of the second half, but it was to be their last. Klavik scored next on penalty, and then Josephson made an underhanded score on a fast break, which was made possible by a Chapla interception. Hawthorne, assisted by O'Connor, scored the last point with 1:41 on the clock. But the game was far from over! Schlitter made more saves, possession changed hands more than once when balls went out-of-bounds, and Hidalgo and Klavik attempted more shots. Then with just 7 seconds left, O'Connor drew a foul and got the crowd cheering for her to score once more, but the point was not to be.
Sarah Hawthorne and Priscilla Lin forced turnovers and Soumya Viswanath fought tough and came up with the ball in a tussle. Ross, Nisbet, and Hagen Donahue made good ground ball recoveries, and Katie McCabe and Alicia Smith showed good hustle and team work.
