April 25
Lady Falcons Clawed by Charlotte Catholic Cougars, 5-18

For the second time in three days, the Falcons squared up against a team of Cougars, this time from Charlotte, and once again, came up short. The Falcon scoring machine was shut down under the hot sun by the nearly impenetrable Cougar defense.

The Cougars took just 22 seconds to score the first point, and then rocketed the next shot in just as quickly. But then the Falcons started fighting back. Numerous shot attempts were made by Meghan Hawthorne, Rachel Chapla, Allie Klavik and Casey Reiser. Deirdre O'Connor and Hagen Donahue forced turnovers, and Kendall Hidalgo intercepted a pass. Meanwhile the Falcon defense prevented the Cougars from getting off no more than one (failed) shot. The Cougars finally broke the impasse and stuffed the next one in. Three awesome saves later by goalie Katie Worsdale, a Cougar penalty shot looked good, but was declared not to be due to a crease violation. Klavik and Chapla continued to wow the crowd with forced turnovers, and Dana Josephson made exciting shot attempts. Finally, Hidalgo spun around outside the 8 meter and put the first Falcon score on the board. "Kendall, we love those outside shots!" was heard in the stand. When the Cougars scored once again with 4 minutes left, a timeout was called. Unfortunately, the Cougars benefitted more so than the Falcons, as the Cougars came alive and put 5 more points on the board (one fast break at a time) before the buzzer, interrupted only once when Dana Josephson, barely picking up a pass from Allie Klavik, shoved one in to get the crowd cheering.

The Cougars continued their scoring streak into the second half, putting one point on the board about every 3 minutes. Claire Kilmer and Colleen Brophy made great defensive plays, Reiser and Hidalgo made interceptions, and Meghan Hawthorne forced turnovers. A shooting space violation on Worsdale (gasp!) left the cage empty, but another one by a Falcon defender put her back in, just in time to save the next shot. Her clear hit Hidalgo and Klavik on its way to O'Connor for a fast break score. Keeping the momentum going, Chapla ran into the Cougar den to score the next point less than a minute later. The Cougars put 2 more points on the board before Klavik, assisted by Hidalgo, scored at the last minute (technically, in the last 57 seconds). With just seconds left on the board, Casey Reiser intercepted a Cougar pass and gave the fans hope for one more point but was unable to make it happen.
