Mother Nature Thwarts Falcon Comeback Against Western Guilford

Taking the sting out of the Western Guilford Hornets, the Lady Falcons came back from a large deficit and were poised to take over the lead when thunder struck and ended the game. The Falcons showed they had wheels and the excited fans kept getting up on their feet in this very close and heart-pounding game. But officially, the game never happened, because less than 80 percent of it was completed.

The game started out well under dark ominous clouds. Deirdre O'Connor got off an early point, but then the Hornets stung back with a vengeance. Priscilla Lin and Colleen Brophy on defense put pressure on the Hornets, and Katie Worsdale made amazing saves, but the Hornets managed to make one point after another until the score was 1-7. Was there any hope for an upset? Then O'Connor got the crowd on their feet when she slammed in a penalty point. Casey Reiser caught the next draw and made an express delivery to O'Connor, who slammed in another one just seconds later. Now the game was on! Rachel Chapla put the next one in from the corner. For the next point, Kendall Hidalgo made a long distance call to Chapla, waiting at the net. An amazing pass and an amazing catch! Dana Josephson caused some excitement when she chased the Hornet goalie outside the cage to end the first half, 5-7.

O'Connor connected to Chapla after Chapla forced a turnover to start off the second half. The Hornets responded with a point to widen the gap, but Dana Josephson, assisted by O'Connor, once again brought victory within reach at 7-8. From the next draw, the Falcons were poised to score again, but what's this? The Western Guilford coach running out onto the field to stop the game due to weather? Minutes later, the team found themselves huddled in a hallway, waiting for the thunderstorm to subside, but when nature's light show ended, the field proved too wet to play. For the records, the game never happened. But the fast paced game proved exciting for the fans, especially with forced turnovers by Meghan Hawthorne, Allie Klavik, Chapla and Reiser, and an outstanding performance by Worsdale.
