Lady Falcons Spoil Playoffs for Western Guilford in Major Upset, 8-5
Deja vu! It seems like only two days ago the Lady Falcons were taking on the Hornets at Western Guilford. Oh wait, it was. And a score of 8-5? That sounds familiar! Oh wait, that was the same score when the two teams matched up last season! In a major upset victory, the 12th seeded Falcons beat the 5th seeded Hornets in the NCHSWLA State Tournament. Onward to Hoggard!
Once again Deirdre O'Connor scored the first point quickly, and once again, the Hornets answered back. But that's where the deja vu ended. This time, it was the Falcon's turn to run up the score! Meghan Hawthorne made good on a penalty. Then Rachel Chapla cut in with a pass from O'Connor. Hawthorne followed up with a left-handed bounce to the net. The Hornets made 2 more points before Hawthorne faked the next point in behind the goalie. A yellow card put the Falcons down one (wo)man, but they were unfazed. O'Connor appeared to score next, but the ball was found to be behind the net. With just seconds left in the half, Chapla forced a turnover and passed to Hawthorne, who streaked down the field as the clock ticked away. "Shoot, Meg, shoot!" her fans and teammates screamed. And shoot she did, just as the buzzer sounded to end the first half, 6-3.
The second half proved to be as exciting as the scores were low. Another long pass from Allie Klavik to O'Connor at the crease widened the gap. The Hornets pushed the next shot in. After several minutes of spirited play, the Hornet goalie escaped her cage but in an exciting move, O'Connor checked the goalie and ran to the cage to score. The Hornets scored last with a toss behind the goalie. As the clock ran down, the Lady Falcons and their fans could not be contained. They were still in the State Tournament! The team could not have done it without the impenetrable wall of Claire Kilmer, Colleen Brophy, Hagen Donahue and sisters Sarah and Meghan Hawthorne. Casey Reiser and Klavik forced turnovers, and Erin Noonan showed great hustle with ground ball recoveries. The Lady Falcons displayed a great depth of talent to pull out an upset victory for a quarter-final berth.
