Lady Falcons Play Spoiler Again to Upset Hoggard Vikings, 12-7

After a close first half, the Lady Falcons temporarily lost the lead at the start of the second half, but came back with a vengeance, scoring 7 straight points while shutting out the Vikings. For the sixth straight year, the Lady Falcons have advanced to the Final Four.

The Hoggard Vikings made the first point, but Rachel Chapla's score (assisted by Deirdre O'Connor) was more impressive as she did it while falling to the ground. The Lady Vikings responded with another point, but Chapla drove through the Viking crowd to tie up the game. Meghan Hawthorne made a long pass to O'Connor, who was waiting at the crease to take the lead. Hawthorne repeated her act with Erin Noonan to increase the lead. (Mama Noonan in the stands couldn't be prouder!) The next point came when Chapla ducked and dodged through the crowd to the net. With less than a minute left, the Lady Vikings scored to end the half, 5-4.

The Vikings gave the Falcon fans a little reason to worry when they opened the second half with three straight points to take the lead, 5-7. Then Allie Klavik faked to the left, faked to the right, then plowed straight down the middle to deliver the next point. O'Connor batted in the next point on a pass from Kendall Hidalgo, and then Dana Josephson flicked the next point in from a pass from Casey Reiser. When O'Connor drew her next foul, she faked a drive to the net, but passed it on to Hawthorne to let her slam it in. A time-out call by the Lady Vikings with five minutes left seemed to rejuvenate the Falcons instead. Chapla made a pass to Hidalgo, who was waiting at the crease to power in the point. Hawthorne dove inside the 8 meter to score the next point. Chapla's next point came from an amazing pass by Hidalgo. With just 20 seconds left in the game, it seemed that victory was a foregone conclusion, but Katie Worsdale continued to play as if her life were on the line. With the clock showing just 2.8 seconds, Worsdale collided with a Viking and was replaced by Cheryl Schlitter, who had to take the ball outside the cage. An intercepted clear resulted in a shot attempt at the buzzer, which was cleanly saved by Schlitter to end the game, 12-7.

The non-scoring action also contributed to the win. Hawthorne, Reiser and Colleen Brophy hustled well on ground balls and slowed down fast breaks. Sarah Hawthorne played good defense and won out hard-fought tussles and ground ball recoveries. Claire Kilmer made nice transitions, and Hagen Donahue frustrated crease rolls. And once again, Worsdale impressed all in the stands with 21 phenomenal saves and 3 exciting interceptions.
