Charlotte Catholic Cougars End "Cinderella" Run for Lady Falcons, 4-13
The Lady Falcons felled two undefeated teams in post-season play-offs, but failed to pull off a hat trick against the Charlotte Catholic Cougars. Both sides played a tough game, but the Cougars out powered the Lady Falcons to advance to the Finals.
The Lady Falcons played a great defensive first half. They kept the Charlotte Catholic Cougars scoreless for the first 13 minutes of the game. Sarah Hawthorne, Casey Reiser and Colleen Brophy proved to be an impenetrable wall and thwarted fast break after fast break. Then Charlotte Catholic put 4 points on the board, but the Falcons made them earn each and every point. Brophy drew a charge, Hagen Donahue and Meghan Hawthorne won on ground ball tussles, and Hawthorne and Brophy drew fouls. Katie Worsdale made several great saves. The Falcons fought a good fight to keep possession of the ball. The first half ended at 0-4.
When the second half started, the Cougars came back with new life. They powered in 4 straight points in three minutes, not even once sharing possession with the Falcons. The Falcons started fighting back, keeping the ball away while looking for shooting opportunities. But the Cougars finally took back the ball and scored again, 0-9. A time-out by Green Hope once again energized the Cougars, as they came back with 2 more fast points. Then finally, Rachel Chapla charged the net to score the first point. The Green Hope fans couldn't have cheered more loudly. The Falcons were finally on the board! The Cougars quickly responded with another point. When Reiser forced a turnover after the Cougar's next won draw, she passed to Meghan Hawthorne, who sprinted down field for a solo run. Reiser, Chapla and both Hawthornes forced turnovers to keep the Cougars from dominating possession, which allowed Allie Klavik to cut in for the next point. Meghan Hawthorne once again wowed the crowd when she immediately took a solo trip to the net straight from the draw. The Cougars managed one more point on a crease roll, but was otherwise unable to score for the last 10 minutes of the game.
