Lady Falcons Overpower the Panther Creek Catamounts, 18-2
Lauren "Coz" Cosentino and Rachel Chapla set the tone early in the game. First, Coz scooped a ground ball and slammed it in for a point. Then Chapla passed to Coz, who spun around and shot for the second point. Next, Coz returned the favor to assist Chapla for the 3rd point on a slow roll into the cage. Chapla took one from Brittany Ruppert and put it in for the 4th point. When Casey Reiser intercepted a Catamount pass, Kay Kay Keung finished the point with a run and gun. The Catamounts then took possession of the ball and gave the Falcon defense a good work out. Allie Klavik showed good hustle when she won a ground ball tussle. Kelsey Collins and Deirdre O'Connor snagged a pair of ground balls. Goalie Katie Worsdale intercepted a pass. Shannon Leonard and Jenna Lang blocked an attacker. Coz intercepted a pass. Worsdale made another save, then Klavik forced a turnover.
Breaking the impasse, Worsdale cleared a ground ball to Casey Reiser, who ran down the field and connected to Collins for the 8th point. Ali Brown blocked a penalty shot, and Dana Josephson drew a foul at the end of a run downfield. She got the crowd excited when the shot was blocked and drew a second foul in the process, but she was denied again. Alannah Garcia, leaning forward to pursue a ground ball, connected her face to an upward-flicking Catamount stick. Coz came in for the injured Garcia to take the penalty point and slammed it in. Hagen Donahue and Josephson elicited groans from the crowd with a couple of missed attempts, as did Collins and O'Connor with points that were declared no good. Coz made a couple of connections for the next two points, first to Collins from behind the cage, then from rookie Kelly Bristow for the next point. On the next draw, Logan Kaznowski appeared to part the Red Sea as she sprinted straight to the goal for the 10th point. The Catamounts finally scored on a crease roll and again on a penalty point to end the half 10-2.
Coz started the second half like she did the first. A connection from Keung, then to Ruppert, put the next 2 points on the board. A slam-in from a ground-ball lit up the board for the 3rd point of the half. A pass from Kaznowski to Casey Reiser upped the score once more. Chapla, from a long pass from Coz off of the draw, put the next one in. Newcomer Klavik wowed the crowd when she put one in quickly from a steal in front of the cage for her first Varsity goal! (Way to go, Allie!) Falcon-turned-Catamount Emily Tatton tried a crease roll on former teammate Cheryl Schlitter, but was denied. In between goal attempts by O'Connor, Collins and Casey Reiser, a crease roll was stopped by Leonard and Elba Olivero. Klavik, having scored her first Falcon goal ever earlier in the game, made sure newcomer Donahue did the same by giving her an assist. (Congratulations, Hagen!)
And then behold! With 5 minutes left in the game, a most unusual sight was seen by the fans. What's this, a goalie taking the draw? With her teammates and fans cheering her on, Katie "I really can play field" Worsdale took the draws and attacked the cage (and her opponents) with the best of them. With less than a minute left to play, Priscilla Lin picked up a ground ball, passed it to Christina Demetros, who then passed it off to Brown. On a dead stick run down the field, Brown delivered to Josephson, who connected back to Demetros for the final point to end the game 18-2.
Worsdale's foray on the field (showing considerable skill and winning both her draws) was equaled in aggression by Kelly Reiser, Taylor George, Nicole Nisbet and Demetros on defensive blocks and ground balls, and Mandy Blackburn on shot attempts. Colleen Brophy and Danielle Johnson mixed it up with the Catamounts and showed good hustle. With the help of her teammates on both offense and defense, Schlitter completed the second half with a shut-out. The victory was a total team effort.
